DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

VISION

The education department core of teacher education in Ghana and the world over is committed to promote teacher education to meet both national and international standards

MISSION

  • The department seeks to create good environment for effective and efficient teaching and Learning and to encourage research in teacher education in the country

 

  • Prepare student teachers with the necessary pedagogical, affective and psychomotor skills to empower them make impact in society, nationally and internationally.

HEAD OF DEPARTMENT

Profile of the Head of Department

Mr. Akurugu Joseph Abanga was born and bred in Kukore in the Bawku West District. He holds two Master’s Degrees; a Master of Philosophy in Basic Education and a Master of Philosophy in Huma Rights, a Bachelor degree in Basic Education, all from the University of Education, Winneba and a Certificate ‘A’ 3-year Post Secondary from St. John Bosco’s College of Education. Mr. Akurugu is an experienced education tutor in St.  John Bosco’s College since 2006 and a part-time lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba Distance Learning Center in Navrongo where he teaches education courses since 2007. He assisted the Coordinator for the Winneba Distance Study Center in Navrongo for fourteen good (14) years.

His research interest is in Supervisory styles of headteachers, and job performance of social studies teachers in public JHS, Human Rights Implications of Widowhood Rites Among the Kusasi in the Bawku West District and School Dropout among Female in Junior High Schools in Pusiga District.

Mr. Akurugu hails from Kukore in the Bawku West District. He had his elementary education in Gbantongo and proceeded to Navrongo secondary school for his secondary education. Finally, he had his tertiary education in the University of Education, Winneba.

He is noted for his leadership roles in the community, church and schools attended, a mentor to many of the youth who come his way. He has attended many workshops and conferences in his career as a professional teacher at both the basic and tertiary levels.

He held the following positions in St. John Bosco’s College; head of department, Teaching Practice Coordinator, Supported Teaching in Schools, assistant hall tutor, and hall tutor and a member to some statotuary committees.  

About the Department

The education department has been in existence since the inception of the college. The department can be called the mother of departments in the college for the fact that all students no matter your programmes will have to study courses in education to acquire the necessary requisite knowledge, attitude and skills leading to the ward of a B.Ed. Certificate.  

 The courses run by the department currently include; Inclusive school-based inquiry, Foundation of education in Ghana, Differentiated planning, learning and multimedia development and usage, Differentiated planning and learning for the upper primary, Multimedia development and usage, Guidance and counselling for upper primary, Guidance and counselling for JHS, Differentiated assessment for upper primary, Pedagogy: growth, development, maturation and learning, Inquiry and action research, History and development of Ghana, Psychological basis for differentiated assessment for JHS, Reflection in micro-teaching, Professional practice and ethics in teaching and Psychology of learning in middle childhood.

 The department has four units which include; Educational studies, Early Childhood, Supported teaching in schools (STS), and Guidance and counselling. The department too has two offices, that is head of department office, a general office and a tutorial hall for the use of students and the conduct of other activities
