HEAD OF DEPARTMENT

Rev. David Azubila Akurugu is an esteemed academician and the Head of the Department of Arts & Social Sciences at an educational institution. With a wealth of experience in the field, he has played a pivotal role in the growth and development of the department since its establishment .

As the HOD, David is dedicated to achieving the department’s vision of becoming a leading department in the college. He strongly believes in the importance of inculcating in students a deeper comprehension and appreciation of the social world. By fostering critical thinking, analytical skills, and creativity, David aims to equip students with the necessary tools to solve personal, societal, and global problems.

David’s mission is to train students to become well-rounded individuals who are socially, economically, civically, morally, and spiritually fit. He recognizes the role of teachers in meeting the academic needs of students at the pre-tertiary level, and his core mandate is to ensure that the department produces highly skilled teachers in the social sciences and arts disciplines.

Under Rev. David’s guidance, the department offers a Bachelor of Education in Social Studies (JHS) program, which has experienced remarkable growth in terms of student applications and intake. Recognizing the demand for diverse academic programs, David has plans to introduce additional programs such as Bachelor of Education in History, Bachelor of Education in Geography, Bachelor of Education in Religious and Moral Education, and other programs in the long run.

Rev. David leads a team of dedicated faculty members in the department’s various academic units, which encompass Social Studies, Religious and Moral Education, African and Liberal Studies, Geography, History, and Music and Dance. In addition, he oversees the Business Education Centre, which runs a mandatory Entrepreneurship course for all students, reflecting his commitment to equipping students with practical skills.

About the Department

The Department of Arts & Social Sciences was established in the 2008/2009 academic year. At the time of its establishment, the department had no academic programme of its own but basically ran cognate courses to complement other departments’ programmes. Today, the department has one academic programme and handles several mandatory courses. Some of these courses include African studies, Liberal Studies, Foundation of Social Studies, Technical, Vocational Education and Training, and Ghanaian Identity, Culture and Arts.

Core Mandate

The mandate of the department is to train teachers in the various Social Sciences and Arts, who would be well equipped to handle students’ academic needs at the pre-tertiary level of our education system. In accordance with the National Teacher Education Curriculum Framework, National Pre-Tertiary Education Curriculum Framework and the College Strategic Development Policy, programmes in the department are subject to review but would largely revolve around the Social Science disciplines. 

Academic Programmes

The department has a Bachelor of Education in Social Studies (JHS) programme with minor areas in History, Geography, Music and Dance, and Religious and Moral Education. Although, the programme was introduced in the 2021/2022 academic year making it one of the two new programmes of the College, it is the fastest growing academic programme in terms of prospective students’ application and intake.

The department in the immediate future, would introduce the following academic programmes: Bachelor of Education in History, Bachelor of Education in Geography, and Bachelor of Education in Religious and Moral Education. The department also envisages mounting a Certificate in Entrepreneurship programme which would be ran on sandwich basis. In the long run, the department would mount four additional programmes. These would include: Bachelor of Education in Economics, Bachelor of Education in Political Science, Bachelor of Education in Music, and Bachelor of Arts in African Studies.

Academic Units

Currently, the department has six academic units namely; Social Studies, Religious and Moral Education, African and Liberal Studies, Geography, History, and Music and Dance. The department also has a Business Education Centre which runs a mandatory Entrepreneurship course for all students.
