To be a leading department in the field of technical and vocational education, recognized for its excellence in practical and theoretical pedagogical skills, and contributing to the development of skilled and entrepreneurial individuals in Ghana

MISSION

The mission of the Department of Technical and Vocational Education is to deliver high-quality teacher education programs that equip graduates with the necessary knowledge, skills, and motivation to effectively teach the basic school curriculum in Ghana. We strive to promote technical and vocational education as a key priority in the country’s educational policy, catering to various types of schools and educational facilities.

OBJECTIVES

  • Provide highly trained and effective new teachers: We aim to deliver well-prepared and highly motivated teachers who possess the required pedagogical skills to meet the demands of technical and vocational education in Ghana.

  • Develop world-class teacher education curriculum: We are committed to continuously enhancing the B.Ed. Junior High School curriculum, recognized as a world-class teacher education program, through the development of comprehensive course manuals for tutors and lecturers.

  • Offer diverse Bachelor’s degree programs: We currently offer a four-year Bachelor’s degree with three distinct units: Technical Education, Home Economics, and Visual Art. Our goal is to provide a wide range of specialized programs within the technical and vocational education and training modules

HEAD OF DEPARTMENT

Mad. Kubabom Rebecca is a highly accomplished and dedicated educational leader who serves as the Head of the Department of Technical and Vocational Education. With her extensive experience in both practical and theoretical pedagogical skills, she brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the department.

Mad. Rebecca is deeply committed to the development and advancement of technical and vocational education in Ghana. She recognizes the importance of this field in meeting society’s current needs and works tirelessly to ensure that the department remains at the forefront of educational innovation and excellence.

As the head of the department, Mad. Rebecca spearheads various initiatives to enhance the quality of teacher education programs. She collaborates with her team to continuously improve the curriculum, incorporating the latest teaching methodologies and industry-relevant skills. Her leadership has led to the accreditation of the B.Ed. Junior High School curriculum, positioning it as a world-class teacher education program.

Under her guidance, the department has successfully implemented competency-based training, aligning the skills and knowledge of graduates with the demands of the job market. Mad. Rebecca has personally received sponsored facilitation training from the Center for Competency-Based Training AAMUSTED, further strengthening her expertise in this area. She ensures that the department remains at the forefront of competency-based education, offering trainees a comprehensive and practical learning experience.

Mad. Rebecca is a firm believer in the potential of technical and vocational education to empower individuals and contribute to economic growth. She actively promotes entrepreneurial and practical training within the department’s curriculum, equipping students with essential skills and knowledge to establish their own enterprises or pursue rewarding careers in trades, industries, or the public sector

About the Department

The Department is one of the oldest in the College with enormous amount of experience in practical and theoretical pedagogical skills. The development of technical and vocational education is one of the key priorities of current educational policy in Ghana, focusing not only on second cycle but also on other types of schools and educational facilities. The Department of Technical and Vocational Education delivers highly trained, effective and highly motivated new teachers who will deliver the basic school curriculum in the country. Following the accreditation of the B.Ed. Junior High School curriculum by the national accreditation Board with its recognition as a world class teacher education curriculum, the decision was taken to support effective implementation through the development of course manuals. The course manuals provide tutors and lecturers with the materials necessary to support teaching each of the B.Ed. programmes. Currently we offer a four-year Bachelor’s degree in three distinct units which is a part of the technical and vocational education and training modules. The Units are Technical Education, Home economics and Visual Art Units

The Department is responding to society’s current needs for a renewed focus on technical and vocational education – a field which has a long tradition in the country. The Department is on the verge of receiving accreditation to offer skills in the Competency base training model. This is so because every member of the department has received sponsored facilitation training by the center for competency-based training AAMUSTED. We also provide in -service Training to serving teachers.

Graduates are qualified to work as highly qualified professional TVET Teachers. Students also acquire essential skills, entrepreneurial and practical training from our curriculum. These offers trainees the opportunity to set up their own enterprises after college or work outside the educational system – in trades, industry or the public sector.

TECHNICAL EDUCATION UNIT

The Technical Education Unit is one of three units under the Department of Technical and Vocational Education. The Unit started offering Teacher Cert ‘A’ and upgraded to Diploma and currently offering a Bachelor of Education (Technical) degree to prospective teachers which started in 2018. Teacher trainees are offered with opportunity to specialize in two of the four domains (Building Technology, Wood Technology, Metal Technology and Electrical and electronic Technology). The Unit has a well-furnished workshop for practical training. Aside been trained to teach the basic school curriculum our graduates also have a wide range of other career options in trade, industry and the public sector.

VISUAL ART EDUCATION UNIT

The Visual Arts Education Unit offers a Bachelor’s of Education degree in Visual Art Education (full-time). Graduates of the Bachelor’s degree can continue their Master’s teacher training degrees in Art Education. As part of these degrees, students can choose an area of creative specialization (drawing, painting, sculpture, graphic art etc.).

HOME ECONOMICS EDUCATION UNIT

Home Economics Education Unit has produced numerous social leaders and middle school teachers in various fields related to life sciences. Based on the philosophy of home economics education, the unit provides opportunities to obtain professional knowledge in the fields of home economics, including child and family studies, family resource management, clothing and textiles, food and nutrition, housing, and home economics education.
